The international body that governs track and field has announced it has "amended its rules" on what shoes athletes can wear in competitions. The changes made by World Athletics Council mean the Nike next-generation Alpha Fly trainer will be banned - the shoe Eliud Kipchoge ran a sub-two-hour marathon in Vienna in October 2019. As a part of the amended rules, shoes must have been available on the open retail market for at least four months before they can be used in competition. On their website, Nike says Kipchoge "tested" a number of "prototype" trainers in competitions suggesting the shoes were not available on the wider market. Nike has been approached for comment.
